  • Senior librarians are also taught how to deal with the dangers of navigating L-space, such as the "harmless kickstool crabs, large and heavy wandering thesauri, the .303 bookworm and the dreaded clichés, which must be avoided at all costs."
  • The name L-space is based on use of E-space (Exo-space) and N-space
    (Normal space) used by Doctor Who.
  • L-space, short for library-space, is the ultimate portrayal of Pratchett's concept that the written word has powerful magical properties on the Discworld, and that in large quantities all books warp space and time around them. The principle of L-space revolves around a seemingly logical equation; it is an extension of the aphorism 'Knowledge is Power'
  • {Books} = {Knowledge} = {Power} = {{Mass} x {Distance}2} x {{Time}3}.
  • Large quantities of magical and mundane books create portals into L-space that can be accessed using innate powers of librarianship that are taught by the Librarians of Time and Space to those deemed worthy across the multiverse.
  • Libraries with enough books to open a portal are often large and sprawling; those venturing into L-space may not necessarily know that they have arrived.
  • The floor and ceiling of L-space follow the floor and ceiling of the library used to access it; the best example of this is that the central dome of Unseen University's library is "always overhead".
  • In every direction and as far as the eye can see bookshelves stretch off, meaning the nature of any walls are unknown.
  • Essentially, all bookstores are potentially infinite in extent; gateways into literary hyperspace: "a good bookshop is just a genteel blackhole that knows how to read."
  • Because L-space links every library, (and also possibly Death's Autobiography Library), it is possible to reach any one of these throughout space, time and the multiverse. This means that there are potentially other forms of data storage other than books as it represents every library anywhere.
  • One can read any book ever written, any book that will be written at some point and books that were planned for writing that were not, as well as any book that could possibly be written.
  • Adventurers may find markings and scribbled notes on the shelves to help them navigate.

Policies

Weapons

All weapons must be checked in with Operations (Ops) as soon as possible following hotel check-in. There are no exceptions to this policy. All weapons must be non-working. Operations will approve and peace-bond any prop weapons. Permission to wear weapons is conditional on this approval by Ops, to whom all weapons should be brought. If you're not sure what constitutes a weapon, you should bring it up to Ops anyway, just to be sure.

You may think that a weapon which stays in your room and only comes out for the Masquerade does not need to be brought to Ops. You would be mistaken; ALL weapons need to be brought to Ops, as soon as possible following check-in.Any weapon that is used in an offensive manner or has not been peace-bonded will be confiscated until the end of the convention. Failure to comply with the weapons policy may result in your membership being revoked without refund.

We expect you to use good judgement in order that everyone may have a safe and enjoyable convention.

Children

Children aged 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while at the convention. Children aged 13 and up, remain the responsibility of their parent or guardian but may, at the parent's/guardian's discretion, attend events unaccompanied. Parents or guardians are responsible for and will be held accountable for all actions of and any damage caused by their children. RavenQuoth, Inc. assumes no responsibility for minors.

Membership

Memberships are sold as non-refundable. If a member discovers that they will be unable to attend, then they may sell their membership to another person as long as RavenQuoth, Inc. are notified of all of the details so that we can ensure that the new member is now registered with us. There are no physical membership "tickets" so the only proof of membership is registration on our membership database.

Membership resales are possible up to 28 days prior to the start date of the Convention.

Photography & Videography

All members are expected to be respectful of other members when capturing someone's image. Membership courtesy dictates that photographers/videographers seek approval before capturing the image of another. Posting of offensive or unseemly photographs of other members without expressed consent of the individual(s) is strictly prohibited. Commercial, photo, video, and audio rights reserved. Some events may not permit photography or videography. These events will be clearly indicated as a No Photo/Video event.

Alcohol

Purchasing alcohol for anyone under the age of 21 is strictly prohibited. Also, Maryland law prohibits alcohol from being served in a hotel by anyone other than the hotel staff. Accordingly, no alcohol will be permitted on the convention floor unless it is purchased from the hotel.

Decorum/Decency/and Other Matters Related to the Seamstresses

The North American Discworld Convention 2013 is a family friendly event and we expect attendees to act appropriately. Any harassment or inappropriate behavior toward other members will not be tolerated and may result in the removal of the offending individual(s) and their membership(s) revoked.

Privacy

Privacy Policy
RavenQuoth, Inc. collect personally identifiable information when 1) you voluntarily provide information to us; 2) it is necessary to administer your membership. Unless we have your prior written or electronic consent, we only use the data collected for those purposes. We will retain personally identifiable information for as long as it is necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, to comply with laws governing our business, including tax & accounting laws, or to satisfy pending requests or orders for access by the government or pursuant to court order. These retention requirements may mean that some of your personally identifiable information may be retained for 5 or more years.
We may disclose personally identifiable information if: 1) you provide written or electronic consent to the disclosure in advance; 2) it is necessary to provide our services to you or to carry out our business activities; or 3) it is otherwise authorized by federal law.
We will not release any such personal information except to those individuals or businesses to which we are legally permitted to do so. We may, at our discretion, provide the Guild of Chelonavigators with contact information in order to promote future North American Discworld Conventions, unless you explicitly deny us.
