Another place, another time... in an age of wander

  • Senior librarians are also taught how to deal with the dangers of navigating L-space, such as the "harmless kickstool crabs, large and heavy wandering thesauri, the .303 bookworm and the dreaded clichés, which must be avoided at all costs."
  • The name L-space is based on use of E-space (Exo-space) and N-space
(Normal space) used by Doctor Who.
  • L-space, short for library-space, is the ultimate portrayal of Pratchett's concept that the written word has powerful magical properties on the Discworld, and that in large quantities all books warp space and time around them. The principle of L-space revolves around a seemingly logical equation; it is an extension of the aphorism 'Knowledge is Power'
  • {Books} = {Knowledge} = {Power} = {{Mass} x {Distance}2} x {{Time}3}.
  • Large quantities of magical and mundane books create portals into L-space that can be accessed using innate powers of librarianship that are taught by the Librarians of Time and Space to those deemed worthy across the multiverse.
  • Libraries with enough books to open a portal are often large and sprawling; those venturing into L-space may not necessarily know that they have arrived.
  • The floor and ceiling of L-space follow the floor and ceiling of the library used to access it; the best example of this is that the central dome of Unseen University's library is "always overhead".
  • In every direction and as far as the eye can see bookshelves stretch off, meaning the nature of any walls are unknown.
  • Essentially, all bookstores are potentially infinite in extent; gateways into literary hyperspace: "a good bookshop is just a genteel blackhole that knows how to read."
  • Because L-space links every library, (and also possibly Death's Autobiography Library), it is possible to reach any one of these throughout space, time and the multiverse. This means that there are potentially other forms of data storage other than books as it represents every library anywhere.
  • One can read any book ever written, any book that will be written at some point and books that were planned for writing that were not, as well as any book that could possibly be written.
  • Adventurers may find markings and scribbled notes on the shelves to help them navigate.
  • Opening Ceremony: 7pm Friday July 5

  • Closing Ceremony: 3pm Monday July 8

Conformance to the following terms, conditions, and policies is a condition of membership. Members agree to the following Terms and Conditions and to abide by the following policies while at the convention, at any pre or post convention tours, other RavenQuoth, Inc. events, or while wearing an event or membership badge. Operations (Ops), Security (The Watch), or Committee members have the authority to respond if they observe any violations of these policies. Violations by members may result in warnings or the revocation of membership without refund. If membership is revoked, no refund will be due and the violator will be asked to leave convention or event areas immediately.

In any dispute over the interpretation or enforcement of any policy, the decision of the North American Discworld Convention 2013 Chair shall be final. We reserve the right to refuse membership to any person; such refusal may not be based upon sex, age, race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, disability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

Terms and Conditions

Registration at Events & Membership Badges

Members must register to have access to conventions or other events. Attendance at membership conventions requires that you are a full member in good standing of RavenQuoth, Inc. and present a government-issued identification at registration. At registration you will receive information about the event, and your membership badge for the event. Your event badge must be worn at all times in the convention or event areas and when participating in other RavenQuoth, Inc. activities including pre and post convention tours.

Event badges are not cancellable if lost; please keep your badge safe. A new badge can only be issued with a new membership. If your badge is damaged and you would like a replacement, bring the damaged badge to the registration desk. There will be a nominal fee for a replacement badge.

General Conduct

RavenQuoth, Inc. events are intended to be a safe and family-friendly environment. Review our policies regarding specifics such as weapons and lost parents. Also know that each event has a general policy that all members, guests, and dealers are expected to behave in a manner that does not endanger the safety, property, or well-being of others.

Stealing or intentionally damaging property belonging to the hotel or others is cause for revocation of membership, without compensation or refund, and immediate removal from the event.

Behavior that endangers the health, safety, or well-being of others is inappropriate. Harassment, bullying, verbal abuse, or physical abuse is not permitted. Likewise, any behavior that is intended or is likely to irritate guests, staff, volunteers, dealers, or other members is inappropriate. Inappropriate behavior that comes to the attention of Operations, Security (The Watch), or Committee members will be dealt with and may result in revocation, without compensation or refund, of membership. If membership is revoked, the offender must leave the event immediately. In addition, hotel security or local law enforcement will be contacted when Operatrions, Security (The Watch), or a Committee member believes it to be prudent or necessary.

To ensure safety and allow for security at the event certain activities are not permitted. These include, but are not exclusive to, rough housing, running, and physical play in the convention or event areas. Parents are expected to keep their children from endangering themselves and others at all times. See Families with Children (below) for additional policies concerning children.

Photographs and Promotional Material Policy

RavenQuoth, Inc. members who attend the North American Discworld Convention or other RavenQuoth, Inc. events are granting their permission to be photographed or recorded by RavenQuoth, Inc., individuals authorized by RavenQuoth, Inc., and North American Discworld Convention. By purchasing your membership you inherently grant RavenQuoth, Inc. and North American Discworld Convention permission to use such images or footage for archival or promotional purposes.

2013 Convention Hold Harmless

By applying for full membership or attending the 2013 Convention (North American Discworld Convention) you agree to indemnify and hold harmless RavenQuoth, Inc., North American Discworld Convention, Terry Pratchett, and their assignees and agents from any claim for personal injuries or other damages or equity arising out of any individual's activities at the North American Discworld Convention and other RavenQuoth, Inc. or North American Discworld events, even if such injury or damage is caused by negligence by or on the part of RavenQuoth, Inc. or North American Discworld Convention or their agents and assignees.

Families with Children

The overall policy of RavenQuoth, Inc. is that we celebrate all ages and encourage youth to join! At events, every member of a family should be recorded, regardless of age. A Membership Badge will be issued to each attendee. We want to give children of all ages the opportunity to belong! Parents and guardians attending the convention with their children remain responsible for their child(ren) and their child(ren)’s behavior at all times. Children under 13 must be under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian at all times the children are at the event. Children 13 and older may attend events and programs (other than off-site events such as pre and post convention tours) without a parent or guardian but the parent or guardian remains liable for the child, the child’s behavior, and any damage done by the child. By registering a child the parent or guardian agrees to assume this liability.

While the entire convention is intended for people of all ages, certain portions may not be suitable for children. Parents and guardians should use discretion when deciding whether a particular item in the program is suitable for their child. If you have any questions, go to Ops.

Please note that while some activities are specifically designed with the younger members in mind, childcare is not provided at events.

All family members must wear their Membership Badges while at the convention so the Watch or Ops can assist in the case of lost parents/guardians. Any child with lost parents should know to go to Ops, ask the Watch, or contact a Committee member for assistance in locating the wayward adult(s).

In case of an emergency, parents and guardians are asked to provide emergency contact information both for themselves at the event (cell phone number) and for someone off-site in case the parents/guardians are unable to be reached or become incapacitated. There is no event-wide paging or PA system so the contact information you provide is the only way we will have to contact you. RavenQuoth, Inc. will not assume a loco parentis role. If a child is lost or in need of emergency care, and their parent or guardian is not able to be located, we may attempt to contact the emergency contact, if one is provided, or may provide that contact information to security, emergency or social service personnel.

Payments and Money Matters

All memberships are non-refundable.

Any check, debit card, or credit card transaction that is returned as unpaid or refused by processor will incur a fee of $30.

Any chargeback (denial of a charge) that is made to avoid payment, without sufficient cause, or without first attempting to resolve the dispute with RavenQuoth, Inc. may result in permanent revocation of membership privileges and possible legal action.

Members who have an outstanding balance must settle that balance before being permitted to attend the convention.

RavenQuoth, Inc. cannot involve itself in financial disputes between individual members, and cannot divulge information about an individual member to any party other than to banking officials or legal authorities.

Hotel Policies

Gatherings in hotel rooms must not generate noise that can be heard in neighboring rooms during nighttime hours. Hotel doors must be kept shut during such gatherings and guests are not permitted to congregate in the hotel corridors.

Please note that Maryland law forbids the serving of alcohol in a public space by anyone other than the hotel’s or caterer’s bar staff. Do not bring alcohol not purchased at a hotel bar into the event area.

Hotel guests who host any gathering in their room are responsible for cleaning up afterward. Excessive amounts of trash must not be left for housekeeping staff to clean up. Trash bags are provided and more can be requested of Housekeeping. Remember, that at any RavenQuoth, Inc. event where a hotel rate is arranged, you represent us, our membership, and our invited authors, artists, and other guests.

Other Hotel Matters

Hotel arrangements are between the hotel and the member. As such, any action contrary to hotel policy may result in eviction. Please be mindful that each of us represents the convention and please act in a manner that reflects well upon the convention’s reputation. Behavior to the contrary including any act of vandalism, deliberate damage to hotel property, or interference with any hotel staff in the performance of their duties may result in immediate revocation of your membership, eviction from your hotel room, criminal prosecution, fines, or any combination thereof.

The person in whose name a room is rented is solely responsible for the conduct of all individuals in the room as well as for the condition of the room. Excessive trash, soiling or other damage to hotel property, or any circumstance that may present a hazard to hotel housekeeping staff may result in immediate revocation of your membership privileges, without refund or compensation, and removal from the hotel.

Members are not permitted to affix anything to the walls of the hotel, to the elevators, to NADWCon or RavenQuoth, Inc. signage, or to hotel room doors. RavenQuoth, Inc. will provide a message board in a public area where members may post messages or place announcements.

Modification and Additions

These terms and conditions may be reasonably modified and additional reasonable or necessary policies may be adopted. Members will be notified of any changes. Current policies, and terms and conditions will be published at www.nadwcon.org. Your attendance at any RavenQuoth, Inc. event designates your agreement to abide by all published policies at the time of the event.
